The Stone Cutters of Vitorchiano

For centuries the livelihood of Vitorchiano has been based on the quarrying and carving of peperino, the volcanic rock on which the village foundation rests. This dark grey stone, peppered with flecks of black, scintillates in bright sunlight. Even the humblest home in the old city center boasts some notable decorative design: a gothic window, frieze, balcony, fireplace, staircase, kitchen sink, coat-of-arms, or fountain testifying to this still thriving, ancient art. Two examples by contemporary craftsmen: fountain and fireplace with spiral design. Click here to see fireplace

Fiorenzo Mascagna of Vitorchiano, sculptor and jewelry designer, draws his inspiration from the sacred art of stone craft in primitive cultures. His fountains and sculptures evoke megaliths and dolmens, his jewelry the talismans and fetishes of African and Asian shamans.

Sandro Piciarelli This licensed builder and contractor based in Vitorchiano restores old homes and historic buildings in the Tuscia area, attentive to the demands and aesthetic requirements of historical restoration. He is also expert in mosaics, patio, and floor designs..
